Fire ants are aggressive, ground nesting ants known for their painful stings and the distinctive dome shaped mounds they build in lawns, landscaping, and along sidewalks and driveways. Red imported fire ants are the dominant species across the Southeast and Mid Atlantic, thriving in the warm, humid conditions found throughout Florida, Georgia, the Carolinas, and Virginia.
Colonies can number in the hundreds of thousands, with interconnected tunnels extending well below the visible mound. When their nest is disturbed, even by a lawnmower or a footstep, fire ants swarm rapidly and sting repeatedly, injecting venom that causes a burning sensation and raised, fluid filled pustules. For some people, especially children and those with allergies, fire ant stings can trigger serious reactions.
Proforce Pest Control includes fire ant treatment as part of our standard pest control plan, so your property stays protected during every scheduled service.
Fire ant mounds are the most obvious sign. They are dome shaped, made of loose soil, and typically appear in sunny areas of your yard like lawns, garden beds, and near sidewalks or driveways. Unlike other ant mounds, fire ant mounds usually lack a visible entry hole on top. If you disturb one and see small reddish brown ants swarming aggressively, those are almost certainly fire ants.
For most people, fire ant stings cause a sharp burning sensation followed by itchy, fluid filled pustules that resolve within a week. However, some individuals, particularly young children and people with insect sting allergies, can experience more severe reactions. If there is difficulty breathing, swelling beyond the sting site, or dizziness after stings, seek medical attention immediately.
Treating individual mounds with store bought products often scatters the colony rather than controlling it. Fire ant colonies can split and re establish nearby, creating more mounds than you started with. Broadcast treatments that address the yard as a whole, combined with targeted mound treatments, are more effective and are part of what our service professionals apply during regular service.
